Professionals or employees seeking to enhance their leadership quality wants to understand the DMAIC methodology from the very close interface. That is the method known to be used in Six Sigma, which helps many organizations to increase their efficiency and effectiveness. “DMAIC” is an acronym which implies:
? Define ? Measure ? Analyze ? Improve ? Control The entire set is known to lead an organization to stronger performance, collectively. The process is known to manage the company’s business process by streamlining the resources and clarifying the business goals.
THE DMAIC APPROACH:
Though the letters of the term have been decoded, and it is made quite simpler to understand the process individually than collectively, one must know how the methodology works. Let’s start!
Define: The six-sigma methodologies believe in defining the “waste” in the first stand. The approach assumes that once the waste got defined, there are lower chances of making the waste. A company’s business growth is dependent upon so many factors. While producing marketable and profitable products, there is also a chance of producing defective materials which not only use the resources but also slow down the business goals.
The main focus of this stage is to outline the project overall. And the initial team development is done in this state.
Measure: This stage of the DMAIC is data oriented. The benefit of this stage is that the quantity of the waste can be measured and understood through the process. The scope of the project, thus, can be measured along with others. The data got collected and is compared with the future result. A roadmap is created in this state to overcome the faults, and the waste gets measured too. After the collection of data, it gets analyzed by the professionals. Histograms are used to understand the data. Process flowcharts and benchmarking are other tools used in this stage.
Analyze: The main intention of this stage is to understand the root of the waste. In this stage, the gap between the determination and the actual goal performance can be measured. Apart from the root cause, many other potential causes can be identified in this stage.
The phase starts with considering every cause as the main or the root cause of the deficiency. The process gets improved by improving the purpose behind the waste. The success of the Six Sigma Certification lies upon, identifying the proper root causes. Brainstorming, Hypothesis testing and other tools are used in this stage.
Improve: Determining potential solutions are the focus of this stage. This phase helps in improving the business process of the organization. The process owners consult and suggest the required improvement in this phase. Action plans are made and get circulated to the stakeholders. The action plan generally includes- the prospect steps and actions to be taken and responsibilities are divided accordingly.
Customer feedbacks and satisfaction- is considered to be an excellent tool for this stage. Mistake proofing, brainstorming, prototyping and piloting are some of the tools used during this step of the Six Sigma strategies.
Control: The main objective of this stage is to generate a monitoring plan which satisfies the business process. The required performance maintenance is focused on during this stage. The primary purpose of this stage is to hold on the gain. The post-implementation results are evaluated during this phase. The pre-approved changes are implemented, and any required correction or modification is done in this stage.
This is mostly the transition phase. The waste gets deployed, and active and new practices are introduced in the business process. Control charts, cost savings, control plan- are some of the tools used during this phase.
TAKEAWAY:
Six Sigma is a globally accepted process. The methodology can be implemented in any type and size of the organization, who seek to improve their business process and stop practising wasteful production. In Six sigma process, improvement is a process and not a destination to acquire once. The continuous improvement of the Six Sigma methodology leads the organization towards excellence.
